Civil War
Last month, I took a business trip to our Seattle office. It was a Sunday afternoon flight, so I found myself with some free time in the evening. Since Downtown Seattle is already quite familiar to me (and many places were closed in the evening), I opted to do something different and went to see "Civil War," a movie I wouldn't typically watch with my family.
The movie just blew my mind when I first saw the trailer.
The premise of "Western Forces of California and Texas" charging into D.C. seemed wildly implausible, which ironically set the stage for an intensely thrilling atmosphere.
How could California and Texas form an alliance? The movie does not provide the answers or details of the setting. Instead, it plunges us into an intense scenario, vividly portraying catastrophic events. The setup feels highly improbable and detached from reality, yet the depicted destruction is so vast that it results in a nonnegligible expected value. The film solemnly delves into this alternate reality, illustrating a chillingly possible outcome.
The movie must be my personal runner-up of this year (as I already decided my best). It was not only the famous "What kind of American are you?" and "300 Canadian" scenes that stood out. The movie was packed with powerful dialogue and exceptional performances; it was fun to watch but painful to embrace. The final scene featuring the POTUS was particularly striking. Can we prevent such a future? I'm confident that, as always, we can find an answer, but the journey won't be easy.
